Walmart Connect Advertising: A Seller’s Guide
Walmart Connect gives Walmart Marketplace sellers a way to buy visibility inside Walmart’s own search results. It works on different principles from Amazon Ads, and treating the two as the same is the most common way sellers waste budget.
What Walmart Connect is
Walmart Connect is Walmart’s advertising platform, letting sellers and brands place sponsored ads within Walmart’s search and on Walmart properties. For a Marketplace seller, the practical value is straightforward: it buys you visibility you have not yet earned organically, while your listings and account health are building.
As with every platform, the available ad types, eligibility and requirements change over time. Confirm the current formats and rules in Walmart’s own seller and advertising documentation before planning spend.
How it differs from Amazon Ads
Sellers who run Amazon Ads well often assume they can copy the same account into Walmart Connect. It rarely works cleanly, for a few reasons:
| Amazon Ads | Walmart Connect | |
|---|---|---|
| Search behaviour | Deep, keyword-driven — shoppers search a lot and refine | Less keyword-rich; shoppers often browse categories and compare price |
| Competition | Generally denser, especially in big categories | Often less crowded, but coverage and quality signals matter more |
| Foundation | Listing quality and reviews drive ad efficiency | Item content completeness and account performance weigh heavily |
| Reporting maturity | Extensive tooling and third-party support | Improving, but with fewer external tools to lean on |
The upshot: structure and intent mapping matter, but Walmart rewards content completeness and competitive pricing more than keyword volume alone.
The foundation comes first
Advertising magnifies whatever your listing already does. Before spending on Walmart Connect, three things should be true, each covered in depth on our Walmart Marketplace services page:
- Listings are complete — every required item attribute is filled, or the ad sends traffic to a page that cannot convert.
- Pricing is competitive; Walmart shoppers compare closely, and an uncompetitive price makes paid traffic expensive.
- Inventory is reliable — an out-of-stock item burns ad spend for nothing.
If those are not in place, fix them first. It is the same discipline as listing optimization, and it is what makes paid traffic profitable.
Setting up campaigns sensibly
- Decide the objective. Launch visibility, steady sales, or defending a position — each implies different targets.
- Start focused. A small set of high-value, well-performing items is easier to learn from than your whole catalog.
- Structure around intent. Separate campaigns for broad discovery and for proven, specific terms — mixing them hides waste.
- Set budgets you can read. A budget you cannot attribute to an outcome teaches you nothing.
- Plan a review cadence. Set a fixed rhythm for reviewing terms, bids and budget — weekly is a sensible default.
What to optimize, and when
- Search terms — promote what converts, exclude what spends without converting.
- Bids — adjust against a clear objective, in measured steps so you can tell what changed.
- Item selection — shift budget toward items that convert and away from those that never will.
- Listing quality — when an ad earns clicks but not sales, the fix is usually the page, not the bid.
- Reporting — track advertising cost relative to sales and, ideally, to contribution margin, not clicks in isolation.

When Walmart Connect is worth it
It is usually worth running when your listings are complete, your pricing is competitive, and you want faster visibility than organic alone provides — particularly for launching new items or entering new categories. It is usually not worth running heavily when listings are incomplete, inventory is unstable, or margins are already too thin to absorb paid traffic. As with any channel, the honest answer depends on your unit economics, which is exactly what a free Ecommerce Growth Audit is designed to surface. Frequently asked questions
What is Walmart Connect?
Walmart Connect is Walmart’s advertising platform for sellers and brands, letting you place sponsored ads within Walmart’s search and properties. Ad formats and requirements change, so confirm the current details in Walmart’s own documentation.
Is Walmart Connect the same as Amazon Ads?
No. They share concepts but differ in search behaviour, competition and how much weight content completeness and pricing carry. Accounts usually need to be rebuilt for Walmart rather than copied from Amazon.
How much should I spend on Walmart Connect?
There is no universal figure — it depends on your margins, catalog and goals. Start with a budget you can attribute to an outcome, review regularly, and scale what proves profitable rather than spending to a fixed number.
Do I need a WFS or a specific fulfillment method to advertise?
Walmart sets eligibility rules that can change, and some requirements relate to fulfillment and account standing. Confirm the current requirements in Walmart’s seller documentation before planning campaigns.
Can you manage Walmart Connect for us?
Yes — see Walmart PPC management. We build structured campaigns once listings and account health are sound. We do not guarantee a specific ROAS or ranking.
