Amazon FBA vs FBM: Which Fulfilment Method Fits Your Products

FBA and FBM are Amazon’s two fulfilment routes, and the right choice is not the same for every product. This guide compares them honestly — cost structure, control, delivery speed and risk — so you can decide per SKU rather than for the whole catalog.

The short answer

FBA (Fulfilment by Amazon) means Amazon stores, picks, packs and ships your orders, and handles customer service and returns for those orders. FBM (Fulfilled by Merchant) means you store and ship orders yourself, or through a 3PL. Neither is universally better: FBA buys you Prime eligibility and simplicity at a cost; FBM buys you control and lower fees on some products at the price of effort.

Decide per SKU, not for the catalog

Most established sellers end up using both. The mistake is choosing one method out of preference rather than testing which fits each product’s size, margin and demand pattern.

What FBA does well

  • Prime eligibility and fast delivery, which many shoppers filter and prefer.
  • Hands-off fulfilment — you don’t pack or ship per order.
  • Amazon handles customer service and returns on FBA orders.
  • Multi-country reach where Amazon’s network operates, without you building logistics.

What FBM does well

  • Control over packaging and branding, which matters for some products and categories.
  • No fulfilment/storage fees — often cheaper for large, heavy or slow-moving items.
  • You can sell inventory across channels from one pool rather than splitting stock.
  • No long-storage exposure on seasonal or low-velocity products.

The hybrid approach

The practical answer for most brands is a mix: FBA for fast-moving, compact, high-demand SKUs where Prime matters; FBM or a 3PL for bulky, heavy, seasonal or low-velocity items where storage and fulfilment fees would erode margin. You can also keep a small FBM buffer to protect against FBA stock-outs during demand spikes.

How to decide, per SKU

  • Model the all-in FBA fee per unit against your landed cost and selling price.
  • Check whether Prime eligibility measurably lifts conversion in your category.
  • Stress-test the plan against your worst-case storage scenario (slow-moving stock).
  • Compare against FBM and a 3PL quote for your specific SKUs.
  • Decide per SKU, not for the whole catalog at once.
  • Review quarterly as fees, demand and product mix change.

Frequently asked questions

Is FBA better than FBM?

Neither is universally better. FBA suits fast-moving, compact products where Prime delivery and hands-off fulfilment matter; FBM suits bulky, heavy, seasonal or low-velocity products where fulfilment and storage fees would hurt margin. Many sellers use both.

Is FBA cheaper than FBM?

Not always. FBA adds fulfilment and storage fees but can save you labour, packaging and shipping effort; FBM avoids those fees but adds your own costs and time. The honest comparison is total cost per fulfilled unit, per SKU.

Do I need Prime to compete on Amazon?

Prime eligibility generally helps conversion because shoppers filter and prefer it, but it is not the only factor — price, reviews and listing quality matter too. FBA offers usually carry Prime; Seller Fulfilled Prime has its own eligibility conditions.

Can I switch between FBA and FBM later?

Yes. Many sellers start with one and add the other as the catalog and margins become clearer. Reviewing the split periodically is good practice as fees and demand change.

Can you manage FBA and FBM operations for us?

Yes. As part of Amazon services we manage catalog, listings, account health and the operational side of fulfilment. We do not guarantee a specific cost saving or conversion lift.
