On Shopify you control the storefront, but you do not control your margin by setting the price alone. Payment fees, shipping, advertising and refunds decide what a DTC order actually earns.

Where a Shopify order’s money goes
Every DTC order carries a set of costs that are easy to overlook when you focus on the selling price:
| Cost | Nature | Typical driver |
|---|---|---|
| Product cost | Fixed per unit | Sourcing, freight |
| Payment processing | Percentage + fixed fee | Provider and plan; varies by country |
| Shipping | Fixed per order | Carrier, weight, “free shipping” thresholds |
| Advertising | Variable per order | Acquisition cost in your category |
| Refunds / chargebacks | Percentage provision | Product fit, quality, expectation-setting |
| Apps and fees | Fixed / recurring | Subscriptions and per-order app charges |
Percentage fees apply to the sale price, so they scale with the order; fixed fees and product cost do not. That distinction is the whole reason a simple markup calculation misleads.
Pricing from margin, not from markup
Instead of “cost times a multiplier”, set price from the margin you need after all percentage costs:
Price = cost base ÷ (1 − selling fee rate − desired margin). The cost base includes fixed costs such as shipping and marketing; the fee rate is your total percentage cost.
This makes the margin explicit and shows immediately when fees and desired margin together are too high to be achievable at any price. Work it out with the free Shopify profit margin calculator or the ecommerce pricing calculator.
Why discounts are more expensive than they look
A 20% discount usually cuts the price by 20% but leaves product cost untouched. The customer pays less, you pay for the product regardless, and the margin percentage falls faster than the headline discount. Before running a promotion, model the discounted price and check the margin that remains — it is often the difference between a profitable promotion and a busy one.
A margin checklist for DTC
- Use your store’s current payment processing rates, not a generic percentage.
- Include a realistic refund/chargeback provision.
- Decide whether “free shipping” is priced into the product or absorbed from margin.
- Track acquisition cost per order, and compare it to contribution margin.
- Model every discount against margin before you publish it.
- Review app subscription costs against the revenue they earn.
Frequently asked questions
What is a healthy Shopify profit margin?
It depends on your category, price point and acquisition cost. Rather than chase a universal number, define the margin your business needs after all costs, then treat products below it as candidates for repricing, cost reduction or removal.
Should shipping be included in the product price?
Either approach can work, but it must be modelled. If you offer free shipping, its cost has to come out of margin somewhere; the calculator includes a shipping field so you can see the effect rather than guess.
Does Shopify take a transaction fee?
Payment processing fees depend on your provider and plan, and vary by country. Enter the rates that apply to your store — this tool deliberately does not hard-code them.
